OcTRAINber 2018: The Foreign Challenge – The Prizes Part 3

As promised in the first part of this three-part article of OcTRAINber 2018 prizes, we would go out with a bang, and what a bang to go out with! Here at BMR we have always been enthusiastic about the PFx Brick, because of the options it gives to customize your engines when it comes to light, sound and power, making sure your models look more and more like the original.

So, our friends over at Fx Bricks have decided to supply us with a very special gift. You know how Lego last year sponsored 10254 Holiday Train? Well, this year Fx Bricks is going to help you add light & sound plus superior controls to the whole thing with their Holiday Train Conversion Kit (link = movie)! As already announced, this will be the second of the two Grand Prizes for our Real Life and Digital Entries!

OcTRAINber Grand Prize, however keep in mind:  Also including a PFx Brick 4MB, but minus the 10254 itself. That one was already last years Grand Prize.
Light, sound, action!

And that’s not all, they have also decided to supply a second prize, a 4MB PFx Brick plus XL Speaker!

The second prize from FX Bricks: PFx Brick 4MB…
… Plus a XL Speaker!

OcTRAINber 2018: The Foreign Challenge – The Prizes Part 2

After the announcement about our first prizes for OcTRAINber, generously sponsored by Lego, including one of the Grand Prizes, 60198, we promised you that we had more awesome stuff coming. So today we can reveal you again a great prize you are contesting for while joining OcTRAINber 2018.

Scott Hoffmeyer over at BrickTracks have decided to sponsor the contest with their newly released large radii tracks. More specifically, we received a full circle of their brand new R56 curves! These curves are the perfect supplement alongside the R40 curves by Lego, you know, the ones of last years “swoosh”!

Another OcTRAINber prize: R56 curves by BrickTracks

Feel like joining the contest after seeing these prizes? You better! For more information you can check the official announcement for OcTRAINber here on BMR. Or, just go directly to our BMR Flickr to upload your entry!

Happy building, happy OcTRAINber!

OcTRAINber 2018: The Foreign Challenge – The Prizes Part 1

Now that OcTRAINber is in full swing and the first entries are coming in we would like to take this opportunity to at least show you all the prizes you are contesting for. We are very glad to announce that three of our favorite brands have decided to sponsor us, meaning we have some pretty awesome stuff to give away. Again, for the sake of the Hype Train, this post will just talk about that first of the three.

So, without further ado, we would like to thank The Lego Company for their Grand Prize: The new 60198 Cargo Train! Moreover, we also received the Pack of Tracks (60205), and the 8293 Power Functions Motor Set.

OcTRAINber 2018: The Foreign Challenge has officially started!

As we announced a bit over a week ago, this year BMR will again run the OcTRAINber contest. Just like last year we have chosen a subject that will hopefully get as many of our fellow trainheads out of their comfort zone and build some truly original and special models. So, let us officially introduce you to the contest and let’s get rolling!

OcTRAINber

First of all, the name. It’s called OcTRAINber, if somebody had not noticed yet. Why OcTRAINber? Well, because it’s a great intermediate month between SHIPtember and Novvember. Also, TRAINS.

Do Trains dream of Space Monorails?

Even though we unfortunately can be almost 100% sure that Monorail will never make a comeback and even though the parts haven’t been produced in 20 years (luckily at least one 3rd party retailer have taken up this loss by producing their own replacements) I still consider Monorails part of our trains universe. Yes, they can be a bit wonky, and yes, they are far from prototypical and don’t look like anything you would see in the real life, but they just look so cool! Most of the monorails that are build by AFOLs nowadays are trying to look contemporary, but this week I spotted one that looks like it just escaped from 1989. Which is btw not that strange, since Frost (the builder) was inspired by a prototype-theme from exactly that year.

Steaming up with the BR 01 513

As one of the few (maybe the only?) contributors to BMR from across the pond, I felt like I really should share something European again, this time a BR 01.5 steam engine of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (the national railways of the DDR) by FLBRICKS. There are two reasons why this is such a great model: One, it’s spot-on, and two, the pictures are gorgeous.

Want to see more? Check FLBRICKS’ Flickr, or go to the Eurobricks Train Tech page where FLBRICKS explains a little bit more about this model! Or click on ‘more’, to see a TT version for comparision.

OcTRAINber: The Results

After a great and exciting month that we dubbed OcTRAINber, the difficult part for us judges had only just begon. However, we have managed to finally decide on the winners, which will be announced in this post!

First of all, let us say that we are pleasantly surprised by all the high quality entries and the great Swoosh-videos. We were very glad to see so many great ideas and prototypes being build, both digital and in real life. In fact, the reason that it took us so long to judge is because of the high quality of all of the entries. Therefore, we would like to thank all our contestants, because without you, OcTRAINber wouldn’t have been the succes it has been!

Now, let’s move on to the award ceremony!

OcTRAINber: A Short Service Announcement

This is a short service announcement for everybody that is eagerly waiting for the final results of the first season of OcTRAINber. We would like to tell of you you that we apologize for the silence from our side, but we are working on the judging as we speak. It has been some busy times for all of us after OcTRAINber ended, which kind of derailed our schedule when it comes to the judging.

We however would like to stress that this has been a great OcTRAINber and we are happy to see so many high quality entries! This obviously makes it even more difficult for us to judge, but it is a price we are more than willing to pay!

So, to keep this service announcement as short as possible: Thanks again for participating and for making OcTRAINber a succes. Our four judges (including myself) are busy judging the entries and hope to finish this as soon as possible. When we have the final results in, we will ofcourse communicate it immediately!

Drifting with Sunder

I agree, this topic title normally makes more sense over at our friends of The Lego Car Blog but thanks to well-know Sci-Fi trains and space builder Sunder, we can now also use this title over at BMR, and not without a reason. Just have a look at this great YouTube video and you know what I mean!

I’m to be honest not sure what is more addictive; that song or seeing 3 minutes of drifting by a Lego Train…

As you can see, Sunder is a great builder who also knows his ways in 3D rendering, which actually gives us the excuse to also feature another of his models which he posted about a week ago. Just have a look and decide for yourself if this is actually a render, or real life bricks…

Want to see more? Just drop by at Sunder’s Flickr for more pictures of these and several other great Sci-Fi trains!

OcTRAINber: The Last Mile

Today is October 30th, wich means just one more day and OcTRAINber is over! For everybody that didn’t enter their entries yet, this post is a friendly reminder that now is the time to add those last pieces, render those last files, snap your last pictures and upload everything to the BMR Flickr page!

We have already seen a lot of great entries and we hope to welcome even more in the coming hours. We are truely overwhelmed by the response to our first ever contest and we are glad that this contest seems to have struck a chord with our community.

Enjoy your last mile of OcTRAINber!

EDIT: Deadline will be October 31st, 23:59 PDT!

EDIT2: Aaand this concludes OcTRAINber! Thanks all for your entries, much appreciated! We are truely astonished by all the great entries, and we know for sure this is going to be a difficult one to judge! In the next days we will communicate more about the scoring and the prizes. But untill then we thank all contestants and hope you all had a great OcTRAINber!
