Iron ore is heavy and the DM&amp;IR operated long trains of ore cars, requiring maximum power. These locomotives were based upon ten\u00a0<a title=\"2-8-8-2\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2-8-8-2\">2-8-8-2s<\/a>\u00a0that Baldwin had built in the 1930s for the\u00a0<a title=\"Western Pacific Railroad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Pacific_Railroad\">Western Pacific Railroad<\/a>. The need for a larger, coal burning firebox and a longer, all-weather cab led to the use of a four-wheel trailing truck, giving them the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2-8-8-4\">2-8-8-4 &#8220;Yellowstone&#8221;<\/a> wheel arrangement. They were the most powerful Yellowstones built, producing 140,000\u00a0lbf (620\u00a0kN) of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Tractive effort\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tractive_effort\">tractive effort<\/a>, and had the most weight on drivers so that they were not prone to slipping.<\/p>\n<p>Eight locomotives (class M-3) were built by Baldwin in 1941. The Yellowstones met or exceeded the DM&amp;IR specifications so ten more were ordered (class M-4). The Rio Grande returned the Yellowstones after air-brake failure caused number 224 to wreck on the Fireclay Loop.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTELeMassena2000_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2-8-8-4#cite_note-FOOTNOTELeMassena2000-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup class=\"noprint Inline-Template\">[<i><a title=\"Wikipedia:Citing sources\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citing_sources\"><span title=\"This citation requires a reference to the specific page or range of pages in which the material appears. (February 2017)\">page\u00a0needed<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup>\u00a0This was despite the Rio Grande&#8217;s earlier assessment that these Yellowstones were the finest engines ever to operate there.<\/p>\n<p>DM&amp;IRs were the only Yellowstones to have a high-capacity pedestal or\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Centipede tender\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Centipede_tender\">centipede tender<\/a>, and had\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Roller bearing\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roller_bearing\">roller bearings<\/a>\u00a0on all axles. Some of the locomotives had a cylindrical Elesco\u00a0<a title=\"Feedwater heater\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Feedwater_heater\">feedwater heater<\/a>\u00a0ahead of the\u00a0<a title=\"Chimney\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chimney\">smoke stack<\/a>, while others had a Worthington unit with its rectangular box in the same location.<\/p>\n<p>Only one Yellowstone was retired before\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Dieselization\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dieselization\">dieselization<\/a>\u00a0took place on the Missabe; number 237 was sold for scrap after a wreck. Of course the real locomotive was never designed for track curves any where near that tight so a little overhang can be forgiven. Given the size of the tender logo, this was a great choice to go with printed brick.
